Ruth's Story

Hi - my name is Ruth! I grew up in London and to me the process of going to school, college and university all seemed normal. Even though I grew up in a single parent household, I still had all that I needed and more.

In 2005, my view of life changed during a mission trip to Uganda when I realised how many privileges I enjoyed as an expat. So I asked myself, “What would have happened to me if my mother had not brought me to the United Kingdom?”

In Uganda I met young people who could not go to school due to lack of fees, single parents who could not feed their children, and grandparents whose children had died of HIV/ AIDS. My heart was broken and I decided that with even only a small amount of time, money and resources, it was possible to make a difference and impact some of these lives. Through this a board of Trustees was formed in 2010 and the charity (no 1137445) was registered in England & Wales (click to see our Charitable Objects). My Child UK was set up to raise funds and the work in Uganda, known as MY CHILD UGANDA (MCU) begun.

MCU seeks to impact lives through education and training while also helping single parents become financially self-sufficient. MCU also helps feed a group of elderly men and women neglected by their community, who are unable to work.

MCU Office is located in Wakiso Town, which is 12 miles from the capital city, Kampala. We also work in Masaka, 84 miles away; Bukomero, 50 miles away; Kyankwanze, 94 miles away; Sembabule, 100 miles away, and Zengebe, 87 miles from Kampala.

Our work will impact lives, one child, one village, one generation at a time, for generations to come.
